Time to move to 4 layer board
Up to now I have stuck to 2 layer boards. I've been working on a sepic converter, 10-32V in 4-18V, 0-1A out for a while. I have had problems resolving the conflict of needing a large open design so that I have enough copper for heatsinking fets and diodes and a compact design so as to keep high frequency loops small... more »

A small rant about the 555 :-)
The people who designed the 555 timer should be given medals for coming up with a deceptively simple device that is still seeing so much use after nearly four decades. They also deserve to be tarred and feathered for the pin-out configuration. :-) I don't know about you others, but I shudder every time I want to... more »

Driver for very small brushless DC motors?
I have a partly-baked idea I'm exploring, for a simple laser beam diagnostic tool. It needs a small brushless motor (less than 10 mm diameter and 3 mm tall) with an ironless rotor. I have possible motors in mind, but it seems that there are few integrated BLDC controller/driver chips these days. I was going to use an Allegro... more »

Pulsed drive of white LEDs?
Has anyone tried driving ordinary white LEDs - the kind used in cheap flashlights - with a pulsed current and done some kind of evaluation of their performance? Any idea if they can cope with frequencies of the order of a kHz? I'm thinking of using them with photosensors with a pulsed drive for discrimination against ambient light. It's for the drag... more »
