Dear All,
The article attached is a very useful and accurate description of the warning signs of flash floods on rivers. Every field researcher who works in or around rivers needs to be familiar with this and educate their staff too. In addition to the signs mentioned by the writer, one may also hear what sounds like heavy rain coming, which is actually the sound of rushing water, and by that time one has only seconds to leave the river.

Dr Azlin,
Bubble in the water is a sign of strong current build up from torrential rain or gushing water from upstream. Most millitary personnel are trained to this situation. Please read the book Sun Tzu's The Art of War. I remembered in one of the chapter Sun Tzu reminded his army not to cross because strong current is coming when he sighted bubble in the river.

Good tips! I didn't notice that. I do know from my father though debris washed from upriver is a very bad sign. To share an experience of a friend below.
Sometimes we came too close for comfort.
