Interesting article on "Chubby Wombat Moonalice," aka, Roger McNamee. Founder of The Flying Other Brothers and Moonalice. He's a bit touchy, so don't call him a dilettante...

Sounds like a great guy. Cool Tuna/deadhead billionaires are never a bad thing, I missed the 8x10 gig but if they're playing 100 shows a year I should get another chance soon.

Moonalice played a few free concerts in San Francisco's Union Square in the last 6 months or so. Although I thought about going, I just decided the price of admission was too high.

I've listened. I've tried, really, I have, to get into this lineup...but man, they are boring as fuck!

Last time I heard them was at Summer Camp. I thought they sounded great. Molo added a much needed boost of energy and there was a great trio jam with Molo, Sears and Sless.
Haven't heard the disc yet.

I can't seem to escape them, with 60% of the band being members of The David Nelson Band. They're opening here for NRPS next month, so I'll see them yet again.
And believe me when I say I really do want to like them. And I would, if it weren't for the McNamee's. Then again, they're subsidizing some of my favorites, so the least I can do is show up for their set next month, for a show which I already have tickets for.

It's an awesome band, except for it's founder, lead singer, main songwriter, female vocalist and the narcissistic guy who recites "legends" of "The Moonalice Tribe" from the stage.

Yeah...but ya get a free poster! ( are they still throwing t-shirts from the stage?) Barry Sless...Molo...and the rest of them guys should be ashamed of themselves.

What's to be ashamed of a steady paycheck? Personally, I can tune out a lot of the weird stuff from the chubby wombat guy and still enjoy what Sless, Smith, Molo and Sears (and sometimes Jack) do so well. I would NOT pay more than $5 to see Moonalice, and I militantly refused their posters at HSBG. But these guys ain't young and if Mr McNamee wants to be their patron and write steady paychecks, ain't no shame in cashing those checks.

Wow, you actually turned down a free Stanley Mouse poster?
Dang, that's standing up for a principle, I guess.

I have maybe 10 Moonalice posters although I've seen them 3 times, I think. An entire forest is denuded every time the band plays for 50 people. A guy I work with goes to all the free Moonalice shows in the Bay Area and has brought me so many free Moonalice posters I had to ask him to leave me off the list. And free stickers by the handful. And a free cd or two. I'm glad the visual artists are being patronized as well as the musicians, as I said before. I like supporting them, too. So I've bought a few things from Stanley Mouse. And from several other artists doing poster art. I can't fork over the kind of bread that the Millionaire-alice guy does. But I don't feel deprived in the least if I miss yet another Moonalice free poster. What would I do with it?

You never know when you might run out of zigzags or toilet paper.
. I've seen the Moonalice band a few times now and have found them pretty enjoyable. I didnt particulary care for the Flying Other Brothers but any band with GE Smith, Cassady, Sless, Sears and Molo is going to be good. I agree that the Moonalice legend stuff gets a little tedious but Ann McNamee smiles more than anyone I have ever seen and she can carry a tune. Roger is competant with what he does and they seen like very nice people. What better way to spend your millions than to finance a group of aged musicians and poster artists (not to mention Steve Parrish). I saw them play a free gig at the California Veterans Home in Yountville on the 4th of July. I was told that the band went through the hospital wards for 2 hours before the show and played acoustic sets for the vets that were bed ridden. I thought that was very classy. WTF, it's only rock n roll.

The Female singer is the epitome of the "band-leader's-wife-as- vocalist". It's tough to watch or listen.

I agree. Whatever the relative merits are, music is ultimately about communicating your vibe and while not all might find this the most compelling vibe, it comes from the right place. It's certainly way way better than the American Idle flavor of the month, although that's a damn low bar to jump over.
