A knowledgable friend suggests Carl Schuricht's LvB "Emperor" ( live ? ) 50's (?) with Backhaus was Backhaus' finest recording.
Anyone heard, would be willing to comment ? Thanks !
And what was the first piece SVR started ( or completed ) AFTER Dr.Dahl. Was it the Op.16 Moments, Op.17 Suite, Op.18 Concerto, or some earlier or later opera songs ? Thanks.

There was no "after Dr. Dahl"--SR considered him his only doctor for decades afterwards. But he seems to have started 16, 17, & 18 simultaneously--or worked at them intermittently--which squares with his process. For example, the musicologust David Cannata has proven that SR worked out the famous inversion that produced the 18th Variation of the Paganini Rhapsody twelve years before he actually set out the whole piece.

His finest recording in general? That's his Brahms 2 with Schuricht (1952) - IMHO. It was my first LP of this concerto and it's still my favourite one.

Thanks, fellows.I do have Backhaus last Brahms 2nd, and think last recorded concerto period, 1967 with Bohm/VPO, which I enjoy so perhaps I'll try the 1952. He also did a very nice Mozart K.595 with the same forces in 1951 , a good omen for the Brahms. I probably should consider yet another "Emperor" as my collection now has Schnabel, Serkin,Rubinstein,Fiorentino, and Ernest Hutcheson, a rather eclectic group.
