Kocsis' recital was surely one of the great ones ! Do try to catch it
in the Radio France Musiques archives where it may be a few days only.
Schubert playing not for the faint of heart , yet of an enobling
vitality, placing Schubert squarely at the same table as
Chopin,Schumann,Brahms,Liszt as an equal and contemporary. In fact
making a case for how much Schubert influenced the Russians ?
Op.90 a freely expressed wonder, D.946 extraordinary virtuosic
Romanticism, D.960 starting out more Classical than either of the
others and then a jaw-dropping,assertive Andante hardly expected, but
extraordinarily effective, certainly not your Gandmother's, or Pires',
Schubert. The Scherzo and finale a continuum.
I dont know what Schnabel or Brendel would say, and one might wish
for a bit more pastel coloring , and warmer touch and transitions, at
times in this recital, but this was breathaking playing, and most
importantly, elevated these Schubert standards to a realm they dont
often rule for me.I shall not be able to listen to these again without
Kocsis' in my ear.
Not often that Schubert elicits shouts from any audience.
Holy cow -- again !
