Over the past few years I've heard rumors that Blu-Ray would overtake SACD as the high resolution physical disc audio format, yet, SACD still seems to dominate and I hear nothing about Blu-ray in this regard now. What happened?

We're only just beginning to see Blu-ray audio-only disks, such as those from 2L.
What it boils down to is whether record companies will continue to release SACDs and listeners buy them. If they do, there probably won't be much interest in Blu-ray audio. If they don't, it means there isn't much interest in high-resolution and/or multi-channel sound.

Is it a big deal for companies that make DVD players (Blu-Ray or not) to make it possible for the players to play SACD discs, thus making purchase of a separate SACD player necessary?

I don't think you said what you thought you said, but anyway...
There aren't many DVD players that can play multi-ch SACDs. I have a Sony, but the SACD feature was unimportant to me; I bought it as a DVD player.
If you want a "do everything" player, get the new OPPO. It plays CD, multi-ch SACD, DVD, and Blu-ray (and few lesser formats), all for $500. (I don't remember if it handles DVD-A.)

It does. The RBCD sound through its analog output unfortunately is rather poor. SACD/DVD-A/Blue Ray all are quite fine. Picture qualities (DVD and Blue Ray) are also very fine. Clearly its 1080p up scan capability is a upgrade from my 5 year old Denon 3910 which only can do 1080i. Since I still don't have a receiver that can handle HDMI interface, I haven't yet get a chance to tryout its true potential. I guess it's about the time for me to upgrade my receiver to the new Denon 4810CI, which is supposed to be able to do 9.3 surround sound. Right now, the only thing I like to see the Oppo to play is all sorts of lossless format from an external hard drive. It can play MP3 already right now, this means all it needs probably is just a firmware upgrade and maybe some patented licenses.

Does it play DIVX files?
Can it be programmed to play DVDs from all regions?

Its DVD players do all of that (though you have to perform a very minor tweak to make them region-free), and it seems from their site and reviews that the blu-ray player does too. E.g. from CNET: "We had a USB hard drive loaded up with music, video, and photos, and the Oppo handled nearly everything we threw at it, including DivX, Xvid, AVI, MKV, JPEG, and MP3 files."
