I first clicked on this today, and found a price of $195.49, discounted from $215.90. Since the original posts didn't mention the source of the astonishment, I was a bit puzzled, but the current price isn't bad. (Not that I'd know how to deal with such a large collection.) --

Check back to the beginning of this thread, if you can. The source of the astonishment was that volume I (88 CDs) was offered for something like $28.95 or a price very similar. Based upon what's been posted here, Amazon caught the error and changed things.

This isn't a particular good price. About a year ago (?) I bought V1 for about $130, V2 for $115. I'd hold off, and look for deals.

I know, but the first few posts didn't mention that price, just the link.

I also purchased volume I about a year ago for $112 from an online source recommended here by Marc P (I believe it was Tower online).
I think I'll hold off on the vocal box as I have everything there except HvK's Lohengrin, Missa Solemnins, and Don Carlos (I think).

I just think they should have made the box with rounded corners:-)
But seriously, there are some wonderful performances in there including: a wonderful Pictures AAE, Bruckner 4&7, All the Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, a great 1947 Beethoven 9th, some wonderful J.Strauss waltzes, etc.

The listed price at the time of my original post was $27.97. Using the free shipping, the grand total for me was $29.65 (Amazon factors in KY state tax).

Mine was the 6th post in the thread and I did mention the price, but you're right that the earlier posts didn't.

At that price even I would be tempted by that box. I say "even I" because after all these years of being enthralled by her singing, I've found only minimal interest in her studio output. So much of it is either too far past her prime or somehow not as compelling to me as her live performances. There are exceptions of course, and naturally I haven't heard many of these recordings...I hope you report back on your favorites as you work through the set.
Many thanks to "Prince M." and to (future) Sir Simon.
I have received BOTH boxes at the small price - this is indeed the deal of the century so far.
Incidentally, broadly speaking, I've always preferred the EMI Karajan over the DG (not that demarcation is entirely consistent, of course!), so now I've got most of the Karajan I ever wanted and wouldn't have bought just because I would spend on other conductors first.
Regarding the Callas set, some controversial transfers apart, it's still a fantastic treasure trove. Callas' Norma - what a joy. Even if particular arias are sang "better" in some ways by Caballe - and better in any respect (no kidding) by Anita Cerquetti, one of the most underrated great Italian singers - Callas' character development is possibly unmatched.
Fifty bucks for BOTH of these? Who's the loser who said the dollar is going to s**t? Oh, sorry, it must have been me.

You're welcome. I'm still awaiting mine, but Amazon sent me an update to let me know that I should get it sooner than originally expected. I better start thinking about where I'm going to put it . . .

Ditto. Glad to see the box isn't quite as big as I was afraid it would be.... Now to find time to listen to it all! (All I've heard so far is half the first disc, featuring some very engaging Johann Strauss with the shortly-post-WWII VPO.)

Hi Simon -
Those early Strauss recordings are quite satisfying. And, there is interesting story behind them.
I have a tape of an interview with the recording engineer Anthony Griffith, reminiscing on his long career. Griffith worked those sessions, and remembered that Karajan at first could not get the right rhythm or flow of the waltzes. A member of the VPO (first cellist maybe?) took Karajan aside to help him get the feel of these pieces. Haven’t played the tape in years – I need to hear it again, great stories regarding Karajan, Beecham, Furtwangler and others.
I have just started sampling the box. Listening to the 1960 Sibelius 5 right now (very good!) I did notice a printing error in the booklet – The first 3 movements of the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra from disc 47 are not listed on page 38. A minor point. This a very impressive set.
I find it laughable that some would avoid this set even at $28. C'mon, people! These two boxes are littered with fabulous performances. What matter if you already have most of them on CD somewhere else? Do as I did and give away the old CDs to friends and family. The savings in shelf space alone is worth the price.
Perhaps of use to those who, like me, have spent time fumbling through the brittle little booklet trying to find, e.g., which of the 88 CDs has that other performance of Brahms 2, Bartok CFO etc. -- I've uploaded a list where the contents are sorted by composer. This is meant to be used with the booklet; only a couple of dates are included. Also, see note at bottom of document, re: a few composers who are only sketchily represented.
