Democrat wins House seat in heavily GOP area in NY LOL

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Democrat Bill Owens has captured the special
election for a New York congressional seat that became a fight over
the identity of the Republican Party.
Owens defeated Conservative Doug Hoffman and Republican Dierdre
Scozzafava (skoh-zuh-FAH'-vuh) in the heavily Republican 23rd
congressional District in rural northern New York. Scozzafava abruptly
withdrew Saturday and supported Owens.

Hoffman has conceded the race.

With 88 percent of the precincts reporting, Owens had 49 percent of
the vote to 46 percent for Hoffman. Scozzafava had 6 percent.

The race has been getting national attention, with some calling it a
referendum on President Barack Obama and others saying it could help
Republicans focus their message to attract more people to the party.

Well after Democrats got their asses kicked in New Jersey and Virginia I
can understand your need to try and find some positive news from the
elections.  But before you get too giddy about their win in the NY 23rd
congressional district, you might want to consider the following facts.

The Republican incumbent was John McHugh who had held the congressional
seat since January, 1993 and would certainly have won re-election.  The
Democrats knew they didn't have a snow ball's chance in hell of defeating
McHugh so they offered him the position of Secretary of the Army.  McHugh
accepted the job in September, which opened up his seat.

The local Republican made a mistake and picked liberal RINO (Republican In
Name Only) Dierdre Scozzafava as their candidate.  It quickly became
apparent that they had made a mistake when Independent Conservative
candidate Doug Hoffman beat her in the polls.  Scozzafava got pissed,
withdrew and then threw all her support behind the Democrat candidate Bill
Owens.   The Democrats pulled out all the stops and sent a lot of money
and personnel to help the Owens campaign.  In addition, Scozzfava took
down some of the absentee votes that had been cast by Republicans before
she withdrew from the race.

Hoffman, who had only been a candidate for a month before the election,
had not raised any money and didn't have much of an organization.
However, even with all these disadvantages he still almost won.  So if I
were you I wouldn't take too much comfort from the Democrat's win in this
cluster-fuck of an election.

Eh, Risky, there was not a Republican in the race.  Sorry to bust your
bubble of enthusiasm.

Yes, there was fake (and uninformed) pickle but she dropped out Friday
because she was so low in the polls and had no chance to win.
