It's interesting at how people are treated. In non tipping countries the waitstaff knows who tips and who doesn't. We get good service because we're obviously Americans and Americans are known to tip. Germans don't tip and get mediocre service. I guess you auzzies get the same treatment.

You Yanks get the same service we Aussies do. It's just that you're silly enough to tip in a non-tipping country.
If waitstaff started differentiating their 'service' of people by who they deem to be tippers or not, they'd soon be out on their arse looking for a new job. Employers look for return customers. If someone gets lousy service right from the start because the waiter/ess deems them to be "non tipping", then the employer loses out on money, so the offending waiter/ess gets the boot.

It would be nigh onto impossible to make the transition in this country to a nontipping basis. I think we're stuck with our present system.

You guessed wrong sorry I have experienced on the norm excellent service without a tip offer although I might if they are good waiters ( and don't feel an obligation to do so ) so you are being silly to just tip as per usual

First you complain about lousy service, then you get all defensive. Make up your mind.

Don't get me wrong. I am fine with it too. Lousy service and/or attitude is definitely reflected in my tip.

I don't think it is impossible to change and I am not fine with it. I like this system much better, where waiters are paid and given benefits just like other working people, are respected just as much as other workers and are never forced to by sycophantic mendicant to pay the rent.
Americans can be so bull headed about tipping that in some restaurants in touristy areas, a waiter will ask for a tip if he thinks you are American-- saying something like "Service is not included on this bill," when his pay and benefits certainly ARE included in the already hefty prices on the menu because it is against the law for it to be any other way.

On one trip to Paris I asked a waitress if service was included. She had an interesting explanation. According to her, in most of the rest of France it is optional for restaurants to include the service in the bill, and the bill has to say whether or not service is included. In Paris service must be included. Since it must be included, they don't have to make that statement on the bill. That solves the problem of getting tips from tourists from non tipping countries. Tourists from tipping cultures usually end up double tipping because they have already paid the service and then leave a tip on top of that.

Yeah, the chip on her shoulder is about the size of an ATM.
But... suprise suprise....... and all credit to her, she did apologize.
Maybe she'll read and follow posts a little more closely in future.
That's the good thing with Xnews...... if I have a 'dodgy' post I'm about to reply to, I do a CtrlF5 and call up all posts made from the last to ..... 17,000 ago, just to make sure I'm 'collaring' the right person.
But then, I was a soldier, an occupation where attention to detail is paramount.
Barbara is a school teacher. Nothing more needs to be said on that.
